Re: Problem with rabbits

Depends on your size of garden time budget asthetics and needs as what solution you will chose - in my opinion. My neighbourhood has a plague of feral rabbits for the last two years. Coyotes bobcats, owls, weasels etc have been converging here for a banquet. l will not make time for nature’s balanci...

Re: R. gallica Splendens x Above and Beyond's first bloom

Thanks again, Pikkalan Kaunota is interesting (actually exactly what I want in a hardy rose for bloom form). I believe the cross with L83 puts Kordessi into the offspring ... I am a reserved about any direct crosses with major contributions of R. kordessi genes for my climate. I fully recognize I ma...

Re: R. gallica Splendens x Above and Beyond's first bloom

The FRS link has been very good reference so far and in the ... going back for a check showed me it looks like another label mixed up because my Posliinikaunotar is not the same except, as a single yellow spino eventually fading to white. Re: R. gallica Splendens x Above and Beyond's first bloom

Ooops sorry, guess others shouldn't be offended, this is second time I spelled "Jukka's" name, wrong. Got Juhani (?) and Jouko named cousins in the family, so I forgive myself for bad memory spelling.

Re: R. gallica Splendens x Above and Beyond's first bloom

Oulu region winter and spring seem similar to southern Alberta Rocky foothills region - without the Baltic influence? - we get westerly Chinook warm winds anytime in winter where a plus 20deg. C change in middle of January is not unusual for a number of days. It can hit +5C to seen it go +15C - if l...

Re: pictures Martin Frobisher Seedling

Okay, when close to send will private message for address to mail to. Just notice today Jamie’s leaf tips are “obtuse” compared to the more acute tips on my Thereses. Other than that l have not spent much time noting bush characteristics other than its growing characteristics, height, bloom, stems/b...

Re: R. gallica Splendens x Above and Beyond's first bloom

If you type in “Chinook Sunrise met its sunset” - you get a sub-artic polar blast opinion thread which is not wrong with respect to value of bloom color ... even if colorful comments. Dr Zleski ? (sic) says it is fertile pollen. There is good photo of the first bloom of Olds College first bloom (min...

Re: R. gallica Splendens x Above and Beyond's first bloom

Chinook Sunrise has only been in garden for one winter. I was cautious with them and covered them with peat moss. l can not comment on winter hardiness other than to say canes above peat moss had to be pruned. Growth this summer is still slow ( year 2 in garden) but excellent, and leaves clean (my g...

Re: R. gallica Splendens x Above and Beyond's first bloom

Here is non bloom photo of the new Tove Jansson.

The pale apricot is a Canadian rose landingscaping rose named Chinook Sunrise.

The red in background is a great British rugosa hybrid named “Hunter”. Not cane hardy, but comes back strongly to bloom and earned its place in the gardens for 17 years.

Re: pictures Martin Frobisher Seedling

Last photo point making. This is peak, max at 1:30 pm full sun today ... now going “mauve”, fortunately more blooms and bushes to follow ... need to collect this pollen this year and see if it will freeze - too busy with rock hardy climber pursuit to cross. Duane if you would like pollen l can send ...

Re: R. gallica Splendens x Above and Beyond's first bloom

Txs for tip ... unfortunately, if you can believe it or not, John Davies seems to not like my garden after repeated failures to survive winter. For others in zone 3a - 4 a CDN no problem and some cane remains. Frobisher and Baffin make it through with cane damage. However with rosa gallicas, Dr. Mer...

Re: R. gallica Splendens x Above and Beyond's first bloom

Thanks Hannu for the hybridizing info and growing experience for a number of examples. Value all of it, and finally great to get feedback on Agatha from another northern country, and the difficulty in using it. Been wondering why it was not used more, do grow an apparently related (debated) Empress ...
