Re: Rose “Ploids” made easy by P Wright

Thanks for the experience relays and map suggestions as its going to be help. Last couple of years l seemed to flaying around in pollinating ... though did learn Simonet’s Dr Skinner and Suzanne seem to be incredible acceptors of pollen to hips... Haidee not working. Last just explodes and doesn’t e...

Txs for memory jog, renewed Premium a minute ago. Did "acquire in theory from Amazon" MR12 ... supposedly at a chasm deep discount.

Re: Rose “Ploids” made easy by P Wright

Sounds like ploids is an area that a newbie should strive for at least a touch of knowledge ... if only to plan crosses with a basic chance of success from which to advance. I like the rolling dice variable aspect to the transfer even if one plans, as highlighted by Wright and thread inputs. Decided...

Rose “Ploids” made easy by P Wright

Thoroughly enjoyed this RoseBulb archived 1964 Wright article on rose chromozones. Works for educating “ploids” newbies like moi. Enjoyed the discussion on “china teas and gallica theory” and Hazeldean. Best take away for me was if l want a smoother start to hybridizing, begin with “like ploids coun...

Free Rose El Ariana - Prefer not to "compost"

I making room this spring in a premium spot, and one rose that is leaving is my El Ariana (Geschwind). Grown it since 2008 (imported from Petrovic's nursery). Not cane hardy enough for me in Zone 3-4 Canadian prairie for the spot, and no other real estate not spoken for. It always gives a few blooms...

Re: Pollen from Canary Bird

If you misspell it as Granny’s Rose vs signage and papers, HMF provides a more reasonable rose description and pictures and hardiness info - solid pink - wrf to Skinner, et Canada etc. And more uncertainty as to what it is ( damask). Sorry if this deemed thread hijacking but at least we know where o...

Re: Pollen from Canary Bird

Here's motivation for you, Grannie's Rose albeit w/o leaves but good signs of hardiness ... can't vouch for it being a damask or Hebe's Lip, not seen it in bloom, but the Heritage caretakers know their "stuff".

Re: Pollen from Canary Bird

Yes just chkd, same spelling, European decent. Did try and grow Hebe’s Lip ( related or same) at one time without success ( but on multiflora which l find poor for here ). Guess more shovel time to earn a cutting.

Good luck on pursuing the fragrance transfer ... somebody has to.

Re: Pollen from Canary Bird

Johannes if you ever find a damascena rubrotincta Canadian commercial source gives us a shout. Apparently grew in Eastern Canada at one time ... was mentioned by Skinner, listed in HMF, not chased whether he had success with it. Aka as Grannie rose ... think saw a similar rose name in Southern Alber...

Re: Pollen from Canary Bird

I will send you “ not likely” Canary Bird pollen or might be “Ecae” - usually late May early June bloom. I appreciate your offer of R. hugonis but l grow one labelled that. Never paid attention to it as a breeder until l saw photos of Kim’s efforts for breeding stock only.

Re: Pollen from Canary Bird

This is my Canary Bird (per BBN label) I acquired way back in time. I took the picture in winter of 2006 blooming in my grow room. Flowers still look like an unlabelled rose in the garden for size and form. Its done better than just survived for 13 winters. However I refuse to declare the rose as su...

Re: Skinner Experience

Hi Karl, this bulbnrose archive is turning out to be a great repository trove of practical “from the author” feet on the ground running experience and observations for true hardy hybridizing. I include another short read Skinner article l found in the trove, 10 years after, that l found interesting ...

Re: Pollen from Canary Bird

Sorry, though like to help and records show a planted Canary Bird from BBN, l have no location memory of whether it survived or not ... have a few hardy yellow singles but no tags except Ormiston Roy and R. Primula and spino hybrids. R. xanthina may arrive this spring, and Thor willing, it will be s...

Didn't find update. May Chelsea cancelled. And most Scandinavian countries on soon to be cancelled Nordic trip have closed borders for awhile.

Re: Rosa Helenae Hybrida Off Spring Success in NAmerican Cold Zones?es?

Txs for the point to the rose - it shows on inventory list but not sure if its available or the Lens creation. However l will roll the dice to test it. Request from soggy Aloha land, where its green and beats being in zone 3/4 right now.
